for the Cure!

Run Details:

Sunday, October 3
Southcentre Mall, 100 Anderson Rd. SE, Calgary

7:45 a.m. Opening Ceremonies
8:30 a.m. Warm-up
9:00 a.m. Start of Run
9:20 a.m. Start of Walk

Distance: 5K run or 1K walk

Cost: (1) $40 Participant Fee OR (2) Raise $150 in Donations

How to Register:

ONLINE
1. Visit the Run website: www.cbcf.org
2. Choose the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure banner
(Left side of screen).
3. Click on the "Register˛ link.
4. Select the run link for łCalgary".
5. Select łJoin a Team".
6. In the Team Name field enter "U of C Faculty of Law".
7. Select the Team Name and Click 'Join Team'.
8. Follow the directions provided.

OR Drop-off registration forms/donations with Eunice Wong in the Student
Services + Admissions Office on the 2nd Floor of MFH. All forms can be
downloaded online.

Registration Deadline to receive team shirts (i.e. team name printed on the
back): Friday, September 17 at 11am (If you miss this deadline you can still
register, but you may not be able to get a team shirt).

Pick-up your Run-Kit on Friday, October 1 before 4:30pm at the Student
Services + Admissions Office on the 2nd Floor of MFH (E-mail Alison if you
canąt make it).

Beginnings of the Bouldering Barristers Club

Locklyn Price is starting up the "Bouldering Barristers", the UofC Law Climbing Club. If you are interested in joining, please visit the club's Facbook page:

Climbing is all about having fun and challenging yourself, so for those people that want to stay active, but don't want to commit to a team, they can join the climbing club. I'm hopefully going to coordinate making routes, help people pass belay tests and get people to go climbing during their breaks. We may even plan some outdoor climbs once it warms up again. There are no cost/registration requirements. If you do want to go on the Big Wall you have to pass a belay test which is 5 dollars through the Outdoor centre. They also have rental gear available, but you don't technically need climbing gear to get started, (eventually though you will at least want a pair of climbing shoes and a harness if you want to climb at the Big Wall)

McLeod & Company Kinball Reminder

The information contained below is in regards to the McLeod and Company Kinball event. Look forward to seeing you there!

The event will start at 6pm on Saturday September 4th. Teams will randomly be created as participants arrive. We will be in the gymnasium at the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association (Click here for a map!) which will be licensed and divided into a playing area for the enthralling sport of Kinball and a 'social' area where you will be given the opportunity to mix and mingle with future classmates and a sampling of upper year students.

What is the sport of Kinball?

Three teams of four compete against each other on the playing surface. The team with possession of the ball screams out "Omnikin" and the color of the team's jerseys they want to score a point against. They team strikes the ball and if it touches the floor both the team striking the ball and the team not required to keep it from touching the floor gain a point. Before striking the ball, three players of the same team must act as a sort of human golf tee by holding the ball up for the fourth player to strike. The ball can also be moved if two players carry the ball (three is not allowed as it signifies a strike is coming).

The sport is harder to explain than it is to simply play it... so don't worry if you're panicked. The University of Calgary excelled at the sport at Law Games in Montreal last year... we have some players who know how to play it relatively well.

What about the proceeds?

Proceeds from the event will be granted back to the students in the form of University of Calgary Bookstore Certificates. The total amount raised and winners will be announced during Orientation on Tuesday, Sept. 7th. (We need the couple of days to tally the costs/revenue of the event).

Is there anything I should know for the event?

* entrance to the event is Free (thanks McLeod & Company)!
* wear running shoes (preferably that don't have black soles as they can mark the floor) and gym clothes (no suits and ties.. you'll get that later!)
* bring a plus one! (there are not many Orientation Events that are plus one friendly... but this one definitely is and it is recommended you bring them!!
* the event runs for 3 hours (until 9pm) and we will ask participants to assist in a quick clean-up... following that... well it will be a Saturday Night with no plans. Enjoy.
* there isn't an ATM at the venue. Bring enough cash for your social needs and a safe ride home if necessary!
* Transit is nearby... there are two buses that stop right in front of the doors of the Hall and the Sunnyside C-Train is about a four block walk away to the East.

Setup

Since we receive the hall at exactly 6:00pm please arrive just a couple of minutes early so we can coordinate table/chair set-up, blow up the ball (it is too big to fit through the doors!), and get the tables set up for beverage sales. Thanks!

BD&P/SLS Golf Tournament Update

The golf tournament is filling it up fast! A note to 1L students that you have until noon on Thursday, September 9th to guarantee your spot. However, as the spots are disappearing quickly it is suggested that you send your registration form in as soon as possible to guarantee your spot. For Upper Year Students, if there are spots available you will be given an opportunity to express your interest and remaining spots will be filled by lottery. Stay Tuned for Details!

Updates, Kinball, and Rugby

First up... the details for Rugby have been cemented and added to the list of events located under New Students Guide and then clicking Orientation Week.

What: Western Canadian Law Rugby Championship
When: 12:00 PM October 2nd, 2010
Where: St. Albert Rugby Football Club located at 51 Riel Drive St.
Albert, which is about 20-30 min drive from downtown Edmonton (St. Albert Rugby Football Club on Google Maps)

Connected to Facebook

The site is essentially up and operational with no broken links. There are a couple of projects underway but FINALLY available to the public without fear of broken links being discovered (if you find any... heckle Shaun Driver somehow so he can fix it).

But, in other news... (and the reason for this post).. we have connected the RSS Feed from the Blog, which already was detailed on the front page is now connected to the Facebook page for the Society of Law Students.

AND... it allows me to check the formatting to the posts for the future. By posting random things link to a video from Law Show 2009

Web Site Update

A couple of things you may have noticed:

a) Executive Profiles are not complete. Please ignore any broken links you find while clicking around under "Executive".

b) The New Students Guide is essentially complete. In the process of finalizing the dates and will update the Calendar of Events as soon as dates are cemented. If you have questions... please contact the SLS!

c) The Facebook Login. At the moment, there aren't any benefits of logging in. However, am in the process of integrating the web-site with facebook to take advantage of all those benefits. I expect it to be a long process... but beneficial.

SLS Elections 2010-2011

We are now accepting applications for the 2010 SLS Elections. The
positions available are:

1. President
2. Vice President Administration
3. Vice President Finance
4. Vice President Events
5. Vice President Marketing
6. Second Year Representative (only avail to 1st yr students)
7. Second Year Admissions Representative (only avail to 1st yr students)
8. Third Year Representative

The time commitment is manageable and there are regular monthly meetings.
If you have any questions about one of the positions please feel free to
contact the current elected representative.

If you are considering running you need to fill out the nomination form
(attached) clearly indicating what position you are running for, 5
signatures and your contact information. Please note you can only run for
1 position.

The election will be held March 22 and March 23 (the Monday after the law
show) in the student lounge.

If you would like to run please email the filled out nomination form to me
at NewGreavesCameron@hotmail.com. Otherwise you can just drop it off in
the SLS office. We will be accepting nominations until 4:30pm Monday
March 8, 2010 after which we will announce all candidates to the student
body. Nominees will have an opportunity to give a speech outlining the
strengths of their platform.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then come to the 2010 Law Show! Awards will be given for best performances, best overall year, and audience involvement.

Ski Trip

***SKI TRIP***

For those of you who missed out on last years insane trip, fear not, as a repeat performance of the same (literally) will be had by all (or at least the first 48 people to sign up).

Hill: Fernie, BC

Accommodations: Timberline Lodge (each unit sleeps 6, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, kitchen amenities, common area hot tub)

Date: January 29 - 31, 2010

Cost: $307 (includes 2 nights accommodations, 2 lift passes and bus transportation)

Who: the first 48 people who sign up - that's right, there are ONLY 48 spots available

You can start signing up for the ski trip November 16th. I will be in the Student Lounge on the 16th and 17th at 12-1pm. You must have full payment with you in order to save your spot (the exception: students on exchange - email me if interested and I will save your spot, but you are on the line for the FULL payment in January).

You can also drop off your name/contact info/payment at the student lounge at any time starting November 16th. Checks are payable to "Society of Law Students".

The 48 spots are only available to law students. If the 48 spots are not filled by November 20th, those remaining spots will be available for friends/families after that date.

Intramurals

Registration for the Winter Semester Intramurals is coming up and a subsequent email will be sent regarding a complete list of teams and contact information. This email covers other issues regarding intramurals.

***Indoor Soccer***

Currently the SLS is sponsoring a co-ed soccer team; however, if we do not have enough (read: any) interest from the ladies, SLS is open to sponsoring a mens only indoor soccer team. I will need responses from interested ladies no later than Sunday, November 15th 8pm.

Furthermore, if anyone is interested in being captain of the coed team, please respond with your student number no later than Sunday, November 15th 8pm.

Law Games Delegation Update

Good News:

After meeting with the faculty, we have gained permission for law games attendees to miss the Monday January 4th of block week. Faculty has made it clear that this will be the last year in which students will be allowed to miss part of block week in order to attend law games.

Bad News:

Law games organizers have limited our delegation to 28 students. So far there have been 64 people who have signed up at our initial intake. This means that you now have to earn your spot on our delegation. How can you earn it? Send me an email describing why you deserve to go. It doesnt have to be long or formally written. Just tell me how you plan to contribute.

Some things we will need help with:
- uniforms
- sponsorship
- organizing something for the talent show (give me your idea if you have one)
- mooting
